Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Working—Now What?

Spring is finally here, which means warmer weather is on its way. Now is around the time when many homeowners will begin to run their air conditioning systems to make sure they are working, and may even keep them on from now through summer to stay comfortable.

But what happens when you go to turn on the AC and it’s not working like it should? Don’t worry—there are a number of things you can do to check the system and potentially start it on your own. As a premier provider of air conditioning repair in Central Kansas, we always recommend that homeowners test their AC units before summer begins, just in case there are problems like these. Here’s how you can fix them.

AC isn’t working at all

If you turn on your AC, lower the temperature and expect it to kick in, the last thing you want to hear is radio silence. If the air conditioner isn’t running whatsoever, first double check that your thermostat is set to “cool” and try lowering the temperature a little more. Sometimes, if the temperature is too high, the unit won’t kick on.

If that doesn’t work, check the power to make sure your AC unit is plugged in and turned on. Then go to your main electrical panel and check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker that may be preventing the unit from running. If this is the problem, replace the fuse or reset the breaker. If you notice that your AC unit is continuously tripping breakers, there might be a short in the system that will require help from a professional.

If you still aren’t having luck, go back to your thermostat and remove the cover and the battery. Replace the battery and firmly shut the cover, then try the system again. Most AC problems are solved by checking these few things. If at this point the unit still isn’t running at all, call for professional air conditioning repair in Central Kansas.

AC is running but isn’t cooling

Sometimes, homeowners will hear their AC units turn on, but the air that’s being blown throughout the house isn’t actually cool at all. Again, the first step to take is to check the thermostat. Make sure it is truly set to “cool” and try lowering the temperature to see if that makes a difference.

If the unit is still not cooling your home, you should check your condenser (outdoor unit) and evaporator (indoor unit) and see if they are being blocked by debris or need to be cleaned. A dirty condenser unit is a major cause of poor cooling, largely because outdoor debris like leaves, weeds and dirt build up on the unit and prevent it from working efficiently. Make sure to turn off the power to your AC unit before cleaning any part of your system.

Once you’ve cleaned the system, if that still doesn’t work, the issue may lie with your refrigerant. This is a problem that must be handled by a professional.
