Someday, you could find yourself in a heated situation. Your air conditioner goes out, and you call for service, but there will likely be a wait. Whether you are going to be without AC for a short time or a long time, here are some tips to help you stay cool when you’re waiting for air conditioning repair in Central Kansas:

  • Use fans: When temperatures begin to soar and your air conditioner is on the fritz, don’t think you have to sit in misery while waiting for help to arrive. When the AC is out, ceiling fans and portable fans are your new best friends. Turn them on full blast and stay nearby. Create a cool wind vortex in a room by utilizing multiple fans all at once. If you happen to have a whole house fan unit, let it run during the cool morning and evening hours, not when it’s hot outside.
  • Close the curtains: While drawing the curtains open lets you see what’s going on outside, it also lets in heat from the sun. To keep the inside temperature more bearable, close all curtains, blinds and drapes for the whole day. Hopefully, the material of your window covering is thick enough to keep heat at bay until your air conditioning technician arrives. In addition, check that all windows and exterior doors are shut tight and not letting in hot air.
  • Don’t cook inside: Home-cooked meals are the best, but you don’t want to cook in your indoor kitchen when the AC is down for the count. Because there will be nowhere for heat to go and no AC to regulate the temperature, the heat from the stove will end up accumulating inside your home. Instead, if you have a barbecue grill or outdoor kitchen, cook on it. You can also use the microwave to warm up leftovers, or just eat leftovers cold. Better yet, if the technician is not scheduled to come until later, head out to a restaurant. Let someone else prepare the meal… and enjoy their air conditioning while you’re at it!
  • Turn off electrical devices: Without the AC to cool everything down that’s inside your house, you want to do what you can to avoid excess heat. That means turning off electronic devices you are not using and unplugging devices that emanate heat even when powered off.
  • Stay hydrated: When indoor temperatures get warm enough, your body will immediately start regulating your internal temperature in an attempt to cool you down. This means excessive sweating. To help your body stay cool and prevent dehydration, you need to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool water and eat water-heavy fruits and vegetables—like watermelon, grapes, berries, cucumbers and celery—to replenish the water you lose through sweating.
