What You Need to Know About Your AC System

The summer is finally here, and with it comes the cooling season. Chances are you’re going to be making pretty heavy use of your HVAC system this summer. With that in mind, here’s some information from an HVAC service in central Kansas about things you should absolutely know about your AC system:

• Keep it clean: One of the best things you can do for the lifespan and efficiency of your AC system is keep it as clean as possible. This means regularly swapping out your filter to prevent the system from having to overwork to deliver your desired results, and regularly cleaning your outdoor condenser, which is exposed to the elements all year long. Even just performing these two simple tasks can add a lot of life to your system and cut down on the energy bills you have to pay each month, not to mention what it does for the actual cooling performance of your unit.
• Beware of frost: If you see frost forming in the outdoor or indoor pipes leading to and from your system during the summer months, this is a big problem. It indicates you’re dealing with a frozen system, which will not properly cool. You’re going to need to thaw out the system to solve the problem, and the best way of doing that is to turn off the AC at the thermostat but keep the fan on. This will push warm air over the ice, thawing it out more quickly. It may take a couple hours or more. If you notice it starting to freeze up again after regular use, you should try changing the filter or calling in a professional to analyze the problem.
• Water leaks: If you start to see water leaking from an outdoor pipe or from a pipe located above a bathtub, this probably means the condensate drain has an issue, and the water is instead heading through an emergency drain system. Call for service if this starts to become an issue for you.
• Thermostat settings: Never set your thermostat to below 70 degrees for your cooling. This will not make the home cool down any faster. In fact, it could actually result in the system freezing up, which only serves to cause more potential problems you’ll need to deal with.
• Plantings: If you’re doing landscaping around your property, make sure you plant new bushes at least 24 to 36 inches away from the outdoor unit. As they grow and mature, they will continue to expand, and you want to make sure you give the bushes enough room to grow without running right up into the AC unit and interfering with its operation. If you already have plants around the AC unit, make sure you keep them properly trimmed to give appropriate clearance for the system.
